Meet Marlies Schoenmakers
Inspired by the nature of the island and the Caribbean Sea, ceramic artist Marlies Schoenmakers creates abstract works with organic forms and flowing lines. The rhythm of waves, the shapes of shells, and the pulsing movements of jellyfish are reflected in her ceramic art, capturing the fleeting beauty of nature in form and color.
Born in the Netherlands, Schoenmakers studied at several institutes, including the Platform for Contemporary Art in Tilburg, before settling in Curaçao. Her installation “Orchid Shell”, composed of 59 handcrafted stoneware pieces in sand and turquoise, references both the Curaçao orchid and seashells as symbols of Caribbean beauty.
Her ceramics can be admired in public spaces across the island, including the Blue Bay Sculpture Garden and the Renaissance Hotel, making her a prominent name in contemporary ceramic art in Curaçao.
