Meet Rien te Hennepe

Inspired by the marble and crystals of Curaçao’s Tafelberg, sculptor Rien te Hennepe lets the stone itself guide his creations. Sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract, his work always reveals the natural colors, textures, and shapes hidden within the material. His sculptures can be admired at several locations on the island, including the Blue Bay Sculpture Garden.

Born in the Netherlands in 1950, Rien moved to Curaçao with his wife in 2002 after his retirement. What began as an exploration soon grew into a true passion. In 2006, he collaborated with Fundashon Pro Bista, Curaçao’s Institute for the Blind, on a tactile sculpture project. Since then, Rien has continued to develop his art, even creating experimental “sound sculptures” that produce tones when touched.

His artistic journey is entirely self-taught, fueled by intuition and a deep respect for nature. With every piece, Rien captures the dialogue between artist and stone, resulting in works that are as surprising as they are inspiring.
